In the spring of 2005 Canadian golf icon Mike Weir launched Mike Weir Estate Winery to showcase the world class wines being made in Ontario's Niagara Peninsula and to support the Mike Weir Foundation. The Mike Weir Foundation was formed in 2004 by Mike and Bricia Weir to assist children in physical, emotional and financial need and since the wineries inception, proceeds from the sale of Weir Wines have gone to the Mike Weir Foundation.
The wines were instantly a critical and consumer success across Canada garnering numerous gold medals, critics acclaim and unprecedented consumer acceptance. In fact, in 3 short years sales volume increased to 30,000 cases and Mike Weir Chardonnay and Cabernet Merlot were available in every Province in Canada. To address this historical growth and to poise itself for the future the winery embarked on a number of initiatives in 2009.
Mike Weir Wine brought on 14 year industry veteran Barry Katzman as President to work directly with Mike's brother Jim Weir on a national quality and growth strategy. The winery announced plans to produce wine in conjunction with the famed Chateau des Charmes in Niagara-on-the-Lake, one of Canada's oldest and most decorated wineries. This move has allowed the winery access to over 300 acres of pristine VQA vineyards enhancing the wine quality and allowing for greater growth.
Mike Weir Wines has embarked on a cooperative venture on the Niagara Parkway in the development and building of the new Mike Weir Winery and Hospitality Centre. This progressive, modern site will include an on-site vineyard, wine production facility, multiple hospitality services as well as Canada’s only Mike Weir Gallery. The Mike Weir Gallery will house memorabilia from the golf career of Canada’s most successful golfer, Mike Weir. This announcement has come on the heels of the wineries plans to build a Mike Weir Winery in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley on a new golf course designed by Mike Weir. Finally, the winery announced a historic selling and marketing agreement with world-wide leader Diageo Brands, the owners of Smirnoff, Guinness, Baileys and Johnny Walker to promote and sell Weir Wines all over Canada and the world.
Although growth and success have come quickly to Mike Weir Wines the company has continued to stay focused on a superior wine product and the work of the Mike Weir Foundation. With 8 PGA Tour victories including the 2003 Masters and a place amongst the greatest Canadians of all time the winery is proud to carry Mike Weirs name and to benefit from his ownership, vision and passion for Canada, for quality wine and for giving back.
