Thanks for visiting my wineries website.
You're probably wondering how a guy like me, a professional
golfer, got into the wine business. In my case it was a
number of things that happened that led to my winery launching
about 4 years ago. For starters, my wife and I are wine
lovers. We have a wine cellar at our home and enjoy many
different wines from around the world and we even planted
some grapes in front of our house. Its a fully trellised
and drained vineyard - about 5 rows and 30 vines per row.
The grapes are too new to be able to harvest for wine yet
but we can't wait to try and do something with them. Wine
has always been part of my life. When I used to go and visit
my grandparents in Niagara Falls; my grandfather was a proud
Italian and he made his own wine and insisted that we try
some. Boy, have we come a long way with wine quality in
the Weir family!
With my Niagara roots I watched with interest as the
Niagara wine Industry started to get recognized around the
world for its wines and I started to take an interest in
Canadian wines in general. When I hosted the Champions dinner
at Augusta National Golf Club in 2004 following my Masters
win I insisted that all of the wine be VQA wines from Niagara.
At that time I received a number of inquiries from passionate
Niagara winery owners about my involvement in a winery and
the idea started to take shape. When my wife and I founded
the Mike
Weir Foundation to help children in 2004 the idea that
a winery could help raise funds and awareness came together
and I launched my first wines in April of 2005.
I take great interest in everything we are doing at Mike
Weir Winery and I'm very passionate about the quality of
our wine. I hope to get more and more involved over time
but my tour schedule and young family are my priorities.
Bricia and I entertain a lot at our home and I love to bring
my wines out. Not so much to promote them but to watch peoples
faces when they find out they're from Canada and the Niagara
Peninsula. Not many Americans know that we have a burgeoning
wine region and even fewer know how good the wine is. I'm
very proud to be able to further the cause of Canadian and
Niagara wines through my travel and the many opportunities
that are afforded me.
I've learned that wine is a very personal thing and people
enjoy it many different ways. I love to pair wine and food
and this website will give you
some ideas on that. I've
also learned that making and creating wine is a passion,
just like golf. Wine to me is a journey. You start out trying
a few things and the next thing you know your reading, buying
more wines, learning more and eventually collecting. Then
one day - you're planting grapes in your front yard! Golf
is very much like that too and I suppose it's why I am so
passionate about both. Before you know it you're buying
better clubs, playing nicer courses taking lessons etc.
I truly hope you enjoy my wines and understand that your
purchase is helping us make a difference in children's lives.
I hope you share your stories about wine and golf with me
as well. I can promise you that I'll bring the same passion
and commitment to quality wine as I have to my golf career
and I hope you join me in that journey.
All the best,
