The Underdog series was developed to speak to Mike’s achievements as an athletic underdog story but also to reference Canada & Niagara’s achievements as a cool- climate growing region. Our ability to overcome the adverse and extreme growing conditions we face vintage to vintage truly speaks to the quality of the wines produced here. The 2013 Underdog Red is a wonderful surprise from the Underdog series. Usually, the Underdog is medium in body & structure but the 2013 vintage has allowed us a bigger, bolder offering. The nose is rich with loads of rich Black-Cherries & Blackberries with a great undertone of cracked black peppercorn/spice. In regards to palate, this wine will take over with notes of rich ripe cherries, raspberry jam and the peppercorn spice follows from the nose.
The Underdog series is always a great exercise in the art of assemblage (blending) which is truly when the winery becomes a winemaker’s playground. The 2013 Underdog Red consists of: Merlot 50%, Pinot Noir 30%, Cabernet Sauvignon 15% and Cabernet Franc 5%. The fruit comes from our own Weir Family Vineyard, Wismer and Werst vineyards. The wines are individually fermented in separate stainless steel tanks and are transferred to barrel post-fermentation. The components for the Underdog red spend 12 months in various types of oak barrels: American, French & Hungarian. After maturation the wine is transferred back to tank to create the final blend.
